Preload vs Preconnect vs Prefetch vs Prerender: What Should the Browser Do Early?
Use preload for a specific resource needed by the current page, preconnect for a critical cross-origin server you will contact soon, prefetch for a resource or document likely needed on a future navigation, and prerender only when a future page is very likely to be visited and safe to run before the user clicks. More hints do not automatically mean a faster site.
